Well, I think we can safely say everyone had a great time at the Gordon District Beaver Funday on Sunday 6th June.
With a film-based theme for the day, we started at 'Backdraft' - the rope climb and 'Voyage of Sinbad' - the obstacle course, both proving just how agile some of the Beavers are. We then went to the hut to make fruit smoothies at the 'Hard Rock Cafe', with more than a few interesting concoctions created! Next stop was 'Twister' at the campfire to toast marshmallows and bread twists before several sticky faces moved on to the next few bases. At 'Hollywood' we painted plaster casts of film characters; 'Tower of Terror' we had to attempt to create the highest tower using hard plastic rollers, and at that point we had the record for 31 stacked; whilst at 'Jaws', the base 1st D.O.M was manning, we were able to show how well we could balance as we 'surfed' along the grass. The Beavers were enchanted at the 'Harry Potter' bases, watching in awe as seemingly ordinary liquids and paper magically moved around plates and bowls; and, once we got the hang of it, we fired water rockets some distance into the trees at 'Poseidon's Fury'.
Next stop...lunch and a well earned rest.
In the afternoon if they weren't being turned into 'Superheroes'; the Beavers were creating origami pteranodons; seeing how much puff they had at 'Storm Force'; or playing hockey in pairs. The Colony particularly enjoyed the next bases - hammering in nails at 'Woody Woodpecker' or making pancakes at 'Close Encounters' - the toppings were piled high as they stuck into the gooey creations. A few well-aimed pellets fired at cans with catapults was then topped by throwing balls through suspended toilet seats! Hunting for gold, making swords and trying to crack the secret code were next on the agenda, but we showed how well the Beavers worked as a team when they managed to transfer water along several lengths of pipe, without getting soaked. As time ran out we managed to go on one final base, 'Doctor Doom's Freefall', that definitely brought smiles to all as they flew down the huge inflatable slide.
Last stop...the marquee for crisps and juice and a singalong before home time.
A great day was had by all, but one thing that definitely stood out was how well-behaved, polite and good spirited our Colony was and all the Beavers should be very proud of themselves. Well done!
Finally a huge thank you to all our helpers; Gill, Sara, Mark, David, Rachael, and Pat who definitely ensured that our Beavers had great fun throughout the day.
Linda
