Daviot Camp Site

E-mail Print PDF

Our main meeting building is a Nissen hut (owned by District) with a railway carriage grafted to the side (owned by us) in the late 60's.

The hall is used for everything from the tradional Scout activities like investitures, to Halloween Nights and even a 24-hour drumming marathon.

It is set in an area of woodland covering about 9 acres which is also District-owned, but in the 1960's was purchased for our Group by a very foresighted man (now our Honorary President!). We had to sell it upwards some time ago for a nominal price as it was getting too expnsive for us to keep going. Although anyone from the District and beyond can use the site, it is ours for exclusive use for routine meetings.

Making use of the trees.

There are almost 30 different species of tree on site and there are eight individual camping sites complete with fixed wooden dining shelters and iron-frame altar fires. Each site gives the campers on it a certain degree of "isolation" but within easy shouting distance of the neighbours!

The individual camping areas are grassed, flat and each equipped with a fire pit, altar fire and fixed shelter.

We also have a flat-grassed games area (about 1/3 the size of a football pitch) and one of our ex-Leaders and the Explorers are currently building a permanent outdoor bivvy circle. We also have the "Sandy Bryce" Campfire Circle - a fixed camp fire ring with amphitheatre-type seating for around 100-150 and there are onsite toilets (in and outdoor).

The site looks great in winter time. We are also sited next to a prehistoric stone circle.

Future plans for the site are some redevelopment of the main hall with the addition of a shower room, drying room and small bunkhouse and a complete remodelling of the back meeting room, toilet and kitchen. There are also some exciting future plans for the railway carriage which we are hoping to announce in the near future.
