Dr. Maitland Mackie, CBE
It is with great sadness that I pass on the news which I have just heard today, that our Group President, Dr Maitland Mackie CBE, has passed away.
Maitland was a Cub, Scout and Venture Scout with the then Daviot Group and remained a huge supporter of the (combined) Group, and scouting in general, for his whole life. He was also, for a time District Commissioner for Garioch District, Aberdeenshire. It was Maitland's vision that led to the purchase of the Daviot camp ground. He led the Group in the 1960's and 70's (he was the first leader of the newly amalgamated Daviot and Oldmeldrum Troops in 1967) and was Chairman of the Group Executive Committee (the Parent Support Group) for many, many years, "retiring" just a few years ago.
Maitland continued his close contacts with us, very recently at a ceremony presenting one of our youngest volunteer adult leaders (Martin) with the Saltire Award for over 500 hours of voluntary work and one of his own numerous and almost permanently-attached Leatherman multitools.
Maitland was an active supporter of the famous Group-run "Cheese & Wine" parties that were held every two years at Daviot and was never happier than when running the "wheel of fortune" and handing out his seemingly never ending supplies of Mackies Ice Cream vouchers. His justification that Ice Cream was, in fact, an AID to dieting, in that it took more calories to raise ice cream to body temperature and digest, than there were calories in it, was logically very compelling!
His contribution to Daviot Oldmeldrum scouting was immense and we will consider suitable ways to mark his legacy. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family at this sad time.
Now that our Group numbers over 150 people - youngsters and adults - electronic communication is our most effective way of getting information to everyone.
Please make sure we have an up-to-date and working e-mail address for you and please remember to check it regularly (no point in having an e-mail address if you only check it every fortnight!).
Also, news items and notices are frequently posted on our Group Facebook page. Please consider signing up for this. For online child-protection reasons we have made it a "closed Facebook group" so you will need to submit a request to join. Click on the link below, sign in to your Facebook account and ask to join. If you need to search for us just type "Daviot Oldmeldrum Scouts" into Facebook's search box.
