Founder's Day 2007
The rainy weather failed to dampen our spirits as the 2007 Founder's Day service got off to a great start with a parade and march from the Oldmeldrum Legion Hall to the Church led by the Oldmeldrum Royal British Legion Pipe Band. There was a fantastic turnout of around 90% of our Group including Beavers, Cubs, Scouts & Explorers. We were joined by the Oldmeldrum Rainbows, Daviot Bownies, the Oldmeldrum Brownies and the Oldmeldrum Guides for a special parade of all the Scouting & Guiding Youth Groups in the area. All the children remarked on how they enjoyed the march up to the Kirk to the sounds of the pipes & drums.
At the Kirk we were welcomed by the Minister, Hugh O'Brian, and we eventually found seats for everyone. Minister O'Brian had generously allowed the youth groups themselves to have a hand in organising and running most of the service. The Rainbows began with a song, then the Scouts showed how quickly it was possible to erect a tent and set up a campsite - during the first couple of verses of a hymn. The Brownies also did a song as did the Cubs and the Beavers (who's hymn to the tune of "The Flintstones" - with choreography by Hugh O'Brian!) was the hit of the day. The theme of the service was "trust" and the Scouts demonstrated the value of trust by falling backwards into the arms of a trusted friend.
During the service, time was also set aside for the investiture of eight Guides into the Movement and Group Scout Leader Keith Millar led all the sections in the renewal of their Promise At the end of the service, all the youth group members formed a "guard of honour" along the church path through which the congregation passed through on their ways home.
We said goodbye to the Rainbows, Brownies & Guides (who had drinks and snacks arranged elsewhere) and all the Daviot/Oldmeldrum Scout Group members returned to the Legion Hall for our own Group's 40th Birthday Celebrations.
After a soup-er soup & trifle lunch, the games began and carried on until 3 o'clock, interrupted only by the cutting of our birthday cake by GSL Keith. The games included Musical Bumps, Pass The Parcel, Karaoke, Twister, Musical Chairs and "Eating-A-Bar-Of-Chocolate-As-Quick-As-You-Can-Whilst-Wearing-Big-Mittens-And-A-Floppy-Hat-Whilst-Holding-A-Plastic-Knife-And-Fork" (anyone supplying a shorter alternative name for this game please see the Leaders!)
